Farewell to an Austin Classic: Little Mexico Closes After Nearly 40 Years

For almost four decades, Little Mexico Restaurant stood as a beloved South Austin institution at 2304 South First Street, serving up classic Tex-Mex fare and welcoming generations of diners to its warm, family-run tables. On February 28, 2026, the restaurant will close its doors as owner Rosa Elia Martinez retires — bringing an end to one of Austin’s most enduring local eateries.

Founded more than 35 years ago, Little Mexico grew from humble beginnings into a cherished neighborhood favorite. Martinez, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, dedicated more than 50 years to the restaurant business, building a place that became much more than a place to eat — it became part of the fabric of South Austin life. Her loyal patrons often described the restaurant as a home away from home, where familiar faces, hearty plates of migas, tacos, and house-made tamales, and warm conversation were part of the weekly rhythm.

Beyond its food, Little Mexico also served as a community gathering space. Over the years it hosted live music, late-night conversations, and tardeadas — festive afternoon gatherings featuring local bands and traditional sounds. In its final weeks, the restaurant marked its legacy with farewell events and music, giving longtime customers one last chance to celebrate what the place meant to them.

Martinez and her family leave with both pride and bittersweet emotion. “Sometimes I feel upset and sometimes I feel very happy,” she shared, reflecting on the community that has supported her over the years. Customers — many of whom grew up with the restaurant as part of family traditions — have already begun sharing memories of birthdays, meetups, and meals that felt like more than just dining.

While Little Mexico’s closure marks the end of a cherished era, the story of South First Street — once part of Austin’s “Mexican Mile” corridor — reminds us of how much the city continues to grow and change. With the property set to be leased to new tenants in the months ahead, many longtime Austinites are taking this moment to pause, remember, and appreciate a neighborhood staple that held a unique place in the heart of the community.
